Google has dozens of real estate projects in the United States, and it says at least 20 key projects will receive investment this year to the tune of nearly $10 billion.

In a blog post on Wednesday, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted nationwide offices and data centers under construction or opening in 2022. In California alone, he is working on construction and some housing in the San Francisco Bay Area, including two large offices. buildings in Mountain View, near its headquarters, and several other office buildings in nearby towns.

Pichai also said he expects to create at least 12,000 new full-time jobs at Google by the end of the year.

The total cost of nationwide investment in offices and data centers will equal approximately $9.5 billion in the United States in 2022, according to the company. This is an increase from the $7 billion and 10,000 new jobs announced last year.

The investments, many of which were underway before 2022, come as the company begins to bring employees back to the office after two years of working remotely during the Covid-19 pandemic. The company’s return-to-office policy is that most employees come to their assigned physical offices three days a week. Despite some employees’ refusal, the company welcomed employees with celebrations that included marching bands and prominent politicians.

As part of Google’s 2022 real estate plans, the company is moving forward with a substantial presence in San Jose, which has approved Google’s plan for a mixed-use mega-campus that spans 80 acres and 7 .3 million square feet of office space in the heart of California’s third largest city. To win over critics, Google designated more than half of its campus for public use and offered a $200 million community benefits package that includes travel funds, job placement training and power to community leaders to influence how it is spent.

Google’s Wednesday post said it had recently opened a new office in downtown Portland and was investing in a data center in The Dalles, also in Oregon. It is also expanding its campuses in Kirkland and Seattle, Washington.

The company is also expanding its offices in New York and updating its campuses in Cambridge and Pittsburgh, the blog post said Wednesday. It is opening a new office in Atlanta, Georgia this year and “making progress” building a new office in downtown Austin, Texas, he said.
