More than a hundred MEPs published a letter on Tuesday urging their president to summon the American industrialist Elon Musk to explain his plans for Twitter.

The Tesla and Space X billionaire has raised concerns about the political direction of the social media platform, which has been widely used by many European lawmakers and policymakers since he took control of it last month.

The Renew Europe group of centrist and liberal MEPs have written to the Speaker of Parliament, the Conservative Roberta Metsola, demanding a hearing on the issue.

“While the precise intentions of Twitter’s new owner, Mr. Elon Musk, are not fully known, his statement and the actions he has taken so far are concerning,” said Dutch MEP Sophie in ‘ t Veld.

Courting controversy as he shakes up the site, Musk has already caused alarm by firing Twitter’s content moderation teams.

He also urged his followers on the platform to support right-wing Republican candidates in Tuesday’s U.S. congressional midterm elections.

The European Union is drafting legislation to regulate the online space, and EU lawyers have often clashed with American tech giants as they try to force them to play by European market rules.

“Twitter cannot become a dystopian hell,” warned Renew Europe’s Internal Market Committee coordinator, MEP Dita Charanzova.

“On the contrary, he must do even more than he has to fight misinformation and hate. That’s what Mr. Musk has in fact signed up to, at least in Europe,” she said. .

“He should come to us to understand the European rules of the game. He has obligations under the (EU) Digital Services Act and the 2022 Disinformation Code of Practice, to which Twitter is subject.”

There was no immediate response from Metsola’s office to the MEP’s request to invite Musk.
